A Colorful Past

In the 1930s during Prohibition, speakeasies and gangster hideouts were common throughout Minnesota. Notorious gangsters, including John Dillinger, Babyface Nelson and Machine Gun Kelly used Saint Paul as a center of operations. Underground caves (one with 1852 carved in the wall) honeycombed the area where InterContinental Saint Paul Riverfront now stands, with some of these caves used as wine cellars. In 1966, when excavating for the original hotel, workers found some Prohibition Era wine racks.
